What are Stress and Fight-or-Fight (FOF) Response? “Stress is essentially the rate of all the wear and tear caused by life.”, The Stress of Life, by Hans Seyle, M.D., (McGraw Hill,1978) Stress is anything that puts the body in flight-or-fight (FOF) mode causing an increase in heart, respiratory and blood pressure rates, and moving blood away from your digestive organs and into large muscles in preparation for a “fight or flight”. In FOF, your body is in a state of red alert or readiness, as it gets ready to run from that big’ol tiger, or to fight competitively for that big business deal. The technical terms for FOF are “activation of the sympathetic nervous system” or “autonomic arousal.” Of the two conditions of stress, acute stress and chronic stress, either may come from biophysical or psychosocial stressors or both. If a person under stress who is on FOF does not discharge the arousal by actually fleeing or fighting in response to that stress (and many modern stresses cannot be run from or fought), the readiness to act is stored chronically in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain that functions as the connection between the mind and the rest of the body. It is like a switchboard that ultimately controls all parts and functions of the bodymind. When stress occurs and a person goes in to FOF, the effect of the stressor (called stress-effect) that is not discharged by fleeing or fighting accumulates in the hypothalamus as stored stress-effect. Over the years, the stored stress-effect increases, creating heavier and heavier burden of readiness in the hypothalamus, until it completely changes how the hypothalamus runs your entire bodymind. The result is your bodymind stays in a continual state of FOF. Ultimately, stored stress-effect directly affects function and dysfunction of body and mind, and is the root cause of many chronic (long-term) health conditions. Stored stress-effect does not actually cause illness by itself, but at least greatly aggravates and contributes to every illness to which humans are heir. Recapture Your Health, by Walt Stoll, M.D., and Jan DeCourtney, C.M.T., (Sunrise Health Coach Publications, 2006). What in the world are Stressors and Stress-Effect? Great question. Knowing the difference between stressors and stress-effect is helpful. Stressors are the “challenges faced by an individual”, whereas stress-effect is your bodymind's “response to the challenge”. In other words, a stressor is ‘what happens’, whereby stress-effect is how a person's bodymind ‘reacts to what happens’; or, put another way – a stressor is the saber-toothed tiger, stress-effect is what you feel in your bodymind in response to this hair-raising encounter. All stressors and the resulting stress-effects act on your physical or biological body in some way or another. A simple example is when you plunge your arm into a bucket of ice-cold water. Your body’s response to the stressor is muscle contraction, and heart, respiratory and blood pressure rates all increase. Smaller bio-physical stressors on the body include ingesting foods with chemical additives and biocides, all of which create a FOF response, but usually in a less dramatic way. Stressors can best be described using the following modern-day categories, 1) Biophysical stressors (Physical), 2) Biophysical stressors (Biochemical), 3) Biochemical stressors (Nutritional), 4) Biochemical stressors (Electromagnetic Smog). Physical Stressors include:
Biochemical Stressors - Only 200 years ago, you could count the number of chemicals on your fingers. A mere ten years ago, the American Society of Chemical Engineers (ACE) announced to the media that they had just synthesized the 500,000th chemical available to the world market for commercial use that had never before existed on the planet. Ponder the bombardment on you body due to these biochemical stressors:
Biochemical (Nutritional) Stressors - Nutritional stressors are a subcategory of biochemical stressors and include:
Biochemical stressors (Electromagnetic Smog) - Electromagnetic Smog stressor is another subcategory of biochemical stress, in that they affect the biochemistry of the body which includes things such as:

What is Skilled Relaxation? Skilled Relaxation (SR) is a skill that you learn and develop that automatically reverses the buildup of chronic stress-effect and does so at a rate of 24 times as fast than sleep. YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE PRACTICING A SKILLED RELAXATION TECHNIQUE WHILE USING EITHER THE HOLOSYNC SOLUTION OR STRESSERASER. How does Skilled Relaxation (SR) reduce Stress-effect? To get rid of stress overload, stress-effect must be discharged faster than it is being accumulated. In modern times, there are too many stressors causing FOF for it to be discharged in the usual eight hours (or less) of sleep. The discharge of accumulated stress, however, can be accomplished through the practice of Skilled Relaxation, in which you are actually changing your brainwaves. Here is a partial list of the proven benefits of practicing Skilled Relaxation 20 minutes twice a day. Skilled Relaxation…
Here are some of the non-physical benefits of Skilled Relaxation…
What are Brainwaves? The first thing you need to know is that twenty-four hours a day, nerve cells in your brain are generating electrical impulses that fluctuate rhythmically in distinct patterns called brain wave patterns—patterns closely correlated with your thoughts, your emotions, your state of being, the functioning of the various systems of your body, and, in essence...the entire quality of your life! There are four categories of brain wave patterns. The most rapid is called a beta brain wave pattern, the pattern of normal waking consciousness. Beta is associated with concentration, arousal, alertness, and cognition. At its highest, most rapid levels, though, beta is associated with anxiety, disharmony, and dis-ease. (Perhaps the ability to slow yourself down from those levels might be beneficial??) As you become more relaxed, your brain wave activity slows into what is called an alpha brain wave pattern. Alpha patterns vary from deep alpha, a state of deep relaxation often referred to as the twilight state between sleep and waking, to the higher end of alpha which is a more focused yet still very relaxed state.
When you are absorbed in a good book (or a television show) you are probably in alpha. And, as I already mentioned, alpha is often associated with what is known as "superlearning"—the ability to learn, process, store and recall large amounts of information quickly and efficiently. Slower still are theta waves. Theta is best known as the brain wave state of dreaming sleep, but it is also associated with a number of other beneficial states, including increased creativity, some kinds of superlearning, increased memory abilities, and what are called integrative experiences (in which we make broadly-based positive changes in the way we see ourselves, others, or a certain life situation). What is brain synchronization...and how can it create a revolution in my life? It's using both sides of the brain to think, instead of using one side at a time, as we usually do. It’s increased communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. It's like thinking in stereo. It gives you a kind of meta-awareness, a new perspective—a view from a higher spot on the mountain. This type of brain function has been associated with geniuses—the Einsteins and Mozarts of the world. Quite frankly, I suspect this is the same type of higher brain function of, say, a Lee Iacocca, a Walt Disney, a Stephen Hawking, and other creative, high-performance individuals like them. Whole- brain functioning is associated with increased creativity... insight... learning ability... problem solving ability... memory... and what some people call vision! Bill Harris, Centerpointe Research Institute. What is the Relaxation Response? It is a simple meditative technique that has helped millions to cope with fatigue, anxiety and stress. This revitalizing, therapeutic technique can release your body’s hidden defenses against stress and stress-triggered illnesses. Once learned, the Relaxation Response takes only twenty minutes a day, and can relieve the restlessness and tension that stand between you and a richer, fuller, healthier life. Herbert Benson, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine at The Harvard Medical School, and Director of the Hypertension Section of Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital, the Relaxation Response, 1975. What is the Awakened Mind? It is a state of higher awareness and control through the use of biofeedback and meditation. Using the science of biofeedback, “listening to the body”, when combining it with the ancient art of meditation, “listening to the soul”, can give you new awareness, new paths to relaxation and health, and dramatically increased mental and creative potential. C. Maxwell Cade and Nona Coxhead, The Awakened Mind – Biofeedback and the Development of Higher States of Awareness, 1979. |
